Details

Sultan Mahmud II is captured in his imperial robes in this stately portrait, dating from about 1809. Combining the dense and brilliant water and bodycolour used by Ottoman artists with European conventions of representation and perspective, the original painting can be seen on display in the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition.

Sultan Mahmud II ruled over the Ottoman Empire from 1808-39 and oversaw a series of reforms of the armed forces and the state during his reign. The work of an unknown Greek artist, this portrait was commissioned by Stratford Canning, a visiting diplomat looking to create a record of the Ottoman institutions, buildings and customs he had seen.

Printed in the UK and supplied with a dusky blue mount chosen to complement the artwork, this compact collectable print is an ideal choice to conjure a refined aesthetic in a small space. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
