The Sultan emerges from the gates of his palace, his elegant turban topped with a soaring feather, escorted by his colourful retinue of guards. This captivating water- and bodycolour work, created in Istanbul in about 1809, depicts the weekly procession to Friday prayers at an imperial mosque. Sultan Mahmud II leaves the Topkapi Sarayi palace astride a resplendent horse, almost obscured by the elaborate ostrich feather headdresses worn by his escort.
The work of an unknown Greek artist, the painting was commissioned by Stratford Canning, a visiting diplomat looking to create a record of the Ottoman institutions, buildings and customs he had seen. The original piece is on display in the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition.
Printed in the UK and supplied with a sugar pink mount, a shade chosen to echo the colour of the guard’s costumes, this tonal tableau would make a wonderful gift for an art lover. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
