Details

Marvel at the resplendent costumes and elaborate ostrich feather headdresses of the Sultan’s procession to prayer with this fascinating magnet. The original watercolour was created in about 1809 in Istanbul and can be seen on display in the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition.

Created exclusively for the V&A, the palm-sized magnet is made using responsibly sourced paper.

Every Friday, Sultan Mahmud II would take to the streets of Istanbul, accompanied by his escort of guards, to attend prayers at an imperial mosque. Seen here emerging from the gates of his palace, Topkapi Sarayi, the Sultan is nearly obscured by the extravagant headdresses of his escort. The work of an unknown Greek artist, the painting was commissioned by Stratford Canning, a visiting diplomat looking to create a record of the Ottoman institutions, buildings and customs he had seen.
