The stately sultan stands tall in his imperial robes in the striking portrait featured on this covetable magnet. The water- and body-colour work was created in about 1809 and can be seen on display in the Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires exhibition. Created exclusively for the V&A, the palm-sized magnet is made using responsibly sourced paper.
Sultan Mahmud II ruled over the Ottoman Empire from 1808-39 and oversaw a series of reforms of the armed forces and the state during his reign. The work of an unknown Greek artist, this portrait was commissioned by Stratford Canning, a visiting diplomat looking to create a record of the Ottoman institutions, buildings and customs he had seen.
