Details

Ottoman subjects gather at the Hippodrome, some enjoying the open space on horseback, others looking on, dressed in their finery. The considered composition captures several of Istanbul’s most iconic monuments; in the foreground, the Egyptian obelisk and the Hagia Sophia, and in the distance, the mighty mosque of Sultan Ahmed.

The Hippodrome of Constantinople was a circus that formed the centre of the city’s sporting and social scene. The area of Istanbul is today known as Sultanahmet Square. The work of an unknown Greek artist, this painting was commissioned by Stratford Canning, a visiting diplomat looking to create a record of the Ottoman institutions, buildings and customs he had seen.

Printed in the UK and supplied with a pale blue mount chosen to complement the artwork, this compact print is a perfect way to add visual interest to a small space. Giclée printing captures fine detail and provides archival longevity, while the quality heavyweight paper holds rich, deep colours and gives a luxury, gallery-grade finish.
