In Victorian times, velvet and pearls were worn as a signifier of wealth and importance, conveying luxury and status. In her mourning period following the death of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria wore black clothes accessorised with colourless stones and pearls, which came to symbolise tears for a lost loved one.
