Taking inspiration from 18th-century textiles, this elegant pendant necklace reimagines historical designs with contemporary flair.
Celebrated jewellery designer Emma Calvert was invited to explore the Museum's archive at V&A East Storehouse with Susan North, V&A Curator of Fashion, 1550-1800.
The result is a unique collection created especially for the V&A shop, inspired by the Regency court dresses and the elaborate passementerie found on bearing cloths. Rococo ruffles are combined with the intricate patterns of metallic lace, creating pieces of wearable history.
Expertly crafted in the designer's studio in Dorset in small batches, each piece in this collection is made using the traditional lost wax casting technique, preserving historical ribbons and lace by casting them in gold-plated recycled silver.
"It was an honour to be guided by Susan through the V&A archive. Her depth of knowledge revealed the material stories, bringing the textiles to life. Beyond the grand gowns - it was the incredible details in the embroidery, the tiny stitches, the swirl of the ruffles, the way metallic thread caught the light even after two centuries - that I was drawn to. I wanted to give these textile moments a new, permanent form with a distinct modern aesthetic.”
