100 years of fashionable womenswear

Discover three unique dresses spanning the 1830s to the 1930s, each revealing the fashion norms and changing styles of the period.

Assistant Curator Claire Allen-Johnstone introduces three dresses from our fashion collection: a Victorian wedding-dress featuring an Indian-inspired paisley pattern, an extremely fashionable lace Edwardian day dress, and a 1930s silk organza evening gown designed by Charles James. Claire unpicks the fascinating details of each dress, revealing that while fashions change, they can often be cyclical – referencing the past, but with a modern twist.
