Donatello's Florence
The great Italian Renaissance sculptor Donatello was born in Florence in about 1386. A wealthy republic brimming with artistic creativity and competition, Donatello flourished in Florence, seizing opportunities to work on the decoration of Florence Cathedral, and forming ties with the highly influential Medici family, who became his patrons. He helped to shape the city through his renowned sculptures, many of which are still in their original locations today.
This 15th-century oil painting, View of Florence, by Francesco Rosselli presents an idealised view of the vibrant Italian city in which Donatello lived and worked. The painting depicts several of the key religious and cultural institutions that commissioned Donatello, supporting his career and cementing his status as a remarkable artist.
