Join the Young V&A Designer in the Shed, Christie Swallow, as we explore the techniques of patchwork, appliqué and machine embroidery to create textile maps, inspired by the V&A collection. Working with scrap fabrics, Christie will demonstrate how to use patchwork to tell stories: patching pieces to create mapping shapes, using appliqué to add depth, and embroidery to annotate details. The session will outline some examples from Christie's art practice, and how they have drawn inspiration from the V&A Collection. By the end of the session you will have a grounding in using patchwork for storytelling and mapping, learning three distinct techniques and how to use them.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience (though you should be comfortable using a sewing machine), and is suitable for participants aged 18 and over.

This session will be held live on Microsoft Teams and will also be recorded. The recording will be emailed to ticket holders after the live event, and will be accessible for 5 days until midnight on Wednesday 18 November.

Please note: Materials are not included. A list of readily available materials is in the downloadable programme here. You will need access to any domestic sewing machine, optionally with an embroidery foot.
