This month Fleur Elkerton, will use the collections in Rooms 8-10 to discuss how the death of both divine and mortal bodies can, conversely, tell us a lot about life in the Middle Ages.
The body was viewed as a site of anxiety throughout medieval European society. From growth in a culture of the macabre, propelled by consecutive outbreaks of the plague (1347 onwards), or the increased divinity of saints’ corpses being put on display for pilgrims to prostrate over - bodies and their demise provides a fascinating entry point into the medieval world.
