It examines the architecture and design of the period against the backdrop of the myriad manifestations of social, economic and technological change.

Christine Lalumia

Christine Lalumia lectures and writes on the design and garden histories of the late 19th and 20th centuries. A Consultant Lecturer at Sotheby’s Institute of Art, she was previously the Deputy Director of The Geffrye, Museum of the Home, London for 21 years. Christine is now Executive Director of Contemporary Applied Arts.

Course overview

Beginning with the origins of the Modern Movement in the years prior to WW1, this course provides a chronological and contextual survey of the century’s principal styles up to the end of the century. These include Art Deco, Surrealism, Bauhaus, Scandinavian Modern, Pop, Contemporary, and Post-Modernism. The course also highlights the contribution and influence of key practitioners such as Victor Horta, J-E Ruhlman, Le Corbusier, Eileen Gray, Charles Eames, Arne Jacobsen, Philippe Starck and Terence Conran. It considers the impact of new materials and technology on furniture, textiles, architecture, and decoration. Additional themes include retail and advertising, international exhibitions, and fashion and identity.

This course takes place over two terms. The autumn term runs from 28 September - 14 December 2017 and is followed in spring from 11 January - 22 March 2018.
