Innovate: Respectful Design with Dr. Dori Tunstall photo

Dr. Dori Tunstall is Dean of the Faculty of Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCAD University) in Toronto, Canada. An academic leader in decolonization and Indigenization of design curriculum and practice, Dr. Tunstall is also the first black dean of a design faculty anywhere. She holds a Ph.D. and MA in Anthropology from Stanford University and a BA in Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College. Dr. Tunstall aims to prepare the next generation of designers with an understanding of the cultural implications of design, and the role of designer as cultural influencers.

In this talk Dr. Tunstall will share her research into respectful design and the decolonization and Indigenization of the design curriculum, and will introduce how her methodologies work in practice in a new project ‘It’s My Future Toronto (IMFTO)’ bringing education, industry, government and BIPOC community partners together to provide opportunities for BIPOC youth, aged eight to 12 years, to design Toronto’s recovery from COVID-19 and address systemic racism for the next three to five years. This talk will provide inspiration for delivering V&A Innovate and ask you to consider how you might introduce respectful design methods into your teaching practice, and create an environment for your students to feel confident in their ability to imagine and design solutions to challenges they may face.

V&A Innovate is an online resource hub, online teacher CPD programme, and National Schools Challenge for Key Stage 3. Free. Booking essential. Event suitable for Secondary School teachers and design education organisations/specialists.
