From a couture Dior gown and a rose-adorned Barbie to ancient mosaics and Victorian Valentine’s cards, discover the extraordinary ways the universally beloved bloom has been depicted through time and across cultures, both within and beyond the garden. Whether as a symbol of beauty and love, a political and religious icon, or an ornamental plant with countless cultivars, the rose has been an undeniable force in popular culture for millennia, from Ancient Greece to today.
To mark the publication of The Rose Book, published by Phaidon, contributors to the book from the worlds of art, fashion and floral design will join us for a revelatory discussion about the many diverse depictions of the world’s most iconic flower.
Moderated by Rake's Progress creative director Victoria Gaiger, the panel will consist of Shane Connolly, a floral designer, ambassador for sustainable floristry, and director of Shane Connolly & Company; Amy de la Haye, a dress historian, writer, curator, professor at London College of Fashion, and author of Ravishing: The Rose in Fashion; and Gill Saunders, former Senior Curator of Prints at the V&A and now an Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the V&A's Research Institute who specialises in and has published widely on botanical illustration, the history of wallpaper, and 20th century and contemporary prints, drawings and paintings.
This talk will be streamed Zoom and all ticketholders will receive a link to view the morning of the event. It will also be recorded for those not able to join live.
