Course overview

This course has been designed as a companion to Unearthed 1 which ran in 2015-16. It is suitable for those who took the first part or as a standalone course.
You will learn how gardens can reflect the concerns and beliefs of the wider society which created them. Consider how meaning has been ascribed to gardens over the centuries, how the availability of exotic and initially unfamiliar plant species led to the formation of great plant collections and botanic gardens and which plants were considered the most valuable or fashionable of their day. From the attempts to re-create paradise to the expression of power in landscape, to the increasing engagement of women with growing and tending, you will gain new ways in which to think about the garden as a social and artistic space.
