Mosaics and Micromosaics: Art, Craft and Identities photo
Mosaics bring together artistry, belief and power, spanning intimate interiors and monumental public spaces. From Byzantine abstraction to twentieth-century propaganda, they tell stories that still resonate today.

This special evening, which will include after-hours access to the newly reopened Gilbert Galleries, celebrates the launch of Mosaics and Micromosaics: Art, Craft and Identities, supported by the Gilbert Trust for the Arts. Richly illustrated and wide-ranging, the book traces the craft from its origins through Renaissance Venice and nineteenth-century London to the upheavals of the twentieth century.

Discover striking works from Westminster Cathedral to Tottenham Court Road Underground Station, alongside contemporary micromosaic jewellery, and explore how mosaics have been used to shape identity and ideology across time.

Sir Tristram Hunt will be joined by the editors of this new work for a dynamic conversation on the past, present and future of this enduring art form.
