Innovate: The built environment with Roma Agrawal MBE photo

Roma Agrawal is a structural engineer who builds big. From skyscrapers – including The Shard – to footbridges, and train stations to sculptures, she has made a lasting contribution to London’s landscape.

She is a tireless promoter of engineering and technical careers to young people, particularly under-represented groups. She has advised policymakers and governments on science education, and has given talks to thousands around the world at universities, schools and organisations, including two for TEDx. She is a television presenter, podcast presenter, and writes books and articles about engineering, education and leadership. Roma has been awarded international awards for her technical prowess and success in promoting the profession, including the prestigious Royal Academy of Engineering’s Rooke Award.

In this talk Roma will share an insight into her career as a structural engineer. She will delve into how engineering and design skills, and developments in materials and new technologies shape our built environment. She will also give some top tips for inspiring young people to get excited by the potential of engineering.

Roma is on our judging panel for the V&A Innovate National Schools Challenge 2020-2021.
