Jugendstil is often perceived as simply the German expression for Art Nouveau, an artistic movement originating in France and Belgium that enjoyed immense popularity around 1900; however, as this course will explore, both ideologically and stylistically Jugendstil is very different from French Art Nouveau.
Dr Anne Anderson, FSA, Hon. Associate Professor Exeter University is a writer, broadcaster and lecturer. Her doctoral thesis was on the Aesthetic Movement. She has held several prestigious fellowships including Fellow of the Huntington Library, CA. and Fellow of the Henry Francis DuPont Winterthur Library and Museum.

On the cusp of the 20th-century, contemporary artists, designers and architects wished to foster a new beginning, a ‘spring’ in the creative arts, but to do this they had to break with tradition or ‘secede’ from conservative art institutions. Through the world expositions, Jugendstil fostered an international nationalism, often drawing on folk traditions to assert regional and national identity.
