Thinking about an online course? Join V&A Academy Course Director Dr Kathy McLauchlan for a free hour long online lecture with live Q&A to explore how Impressionists captured the world around them.

In the 1870s Paris was the capital of western art. Artists travelled there from across Europe and America to study, exhibit and sell. And the city itself, transformed under Napoleon III into a modern metropolis, inspired many artists of the period. These included the group we know as the Impressionists, who saw Paris - with its grand boulevards and vibrant nightlife - as the starting point for a revolutionary new approach to painting.

If you like this taster lecture you might like Kathy McLauchlan's upcoming 5 week long online course Paris: Impressionism to Avant-Garde.
