Balaclava helmet, wristlets, mittens and scarf set

Banish the cold with this comprehensive set of winter warmers from the 1950s, including 'wristlets' for those prone to chilly wrists.

A – Balaclava helmet

Suggested yarn: 4 ozs. PATONS ROSE, or WHITE HEATHER
Yarn weight: Fingering, 4-ply
Needle size: Four No. 6 BEEHIVE knitting needles, with points at both ends, measured by the Beehive gauge.
Tension: 6 stitches to the inch in width (measured flat) must be obtained. If, using the needles recommended, more than 6 stitches to the inch are obtained, needles a size coarser should be tried; if less than 6 inches, then a size finer.

B – Wristlets

Suggested yarn: 2 ozs. PATONS ROSE, or WHITE HEATHER
Yarn weight: Fingering, 4-ply
Needle size: Four No. 10 BEEHIVE knitting needles, with points at both ends, measured by the Beehive gauge.
Tension: 7 ½ stitches to the inch in width (measured flat) must be obtained. If, using the needles recommended, more than 7 ½ stitches to the inch are obtained, needles a size coarser should be tried; if less than 7 ½ inches, then a size finer.

C – Mittens

Suggested yarn: 4 ozs. PATONS ROSE, or WHITE HEATHER
Yarn weight: Fingering, 4-ply
Needle size: Two No. 10 BEEHIVE knitting needles, measured by the Beehive gauge.
Tension: 7 stitches to the inch in width (measured flat) must be obtained. If, using the needles recommended, more than 7 stitches to the inch are obtained, needles a size coarser should be tried; if less than 7 inches, then a size finer.

D – Scarf

Suggested yarn: 13 ozs. PATONS ROSE, or WHITE HEATHER
Yarn weight: Fingering, 4-ply
Needle size: Four No. 6 BEEHIVE knitting needles, with points at both ends, measured by the Beehive gauge.
Tension: 5 stitches to the inch in width (not stretched) must be obtained to give a garment of the above-mentioned size. If, using the needles recommended, more than 5 stitches to the inch are obtained, needles a size coarser should be tried; if less than 5 inches, then a size finer.

Suggested yarn: 5 ozs. of J. & J. Baldwin’s ‘Beehive’ Double Knitting Wool.
Needle size: No. 7 bone knitting needles; a fifth needle of the same size is also a help when knitting the rounds with many stitches, so it is advisable to get an extra pair. This helmet is full size.

Ribbed socks

Yarn weight: Scotch Fingering wool
Needle size: Four No. 13
