The V&A has collected outstanding examples of art and design from across the world since its inception in 1851, enthusing and inspiring the visiting public and creative practitioners. Staying in tune with international creative practices remains a core aspect of our mission. Today, the Museum operates on a global scale through research, strategic partnerships, trading, touring exhibitions, professional training and consultancy.
Around half of all visitors to our main site at London's South Kensington come from overseas. We also work in and with several territories around the globe.
The V&A has collected African objects since its inception and has been active in representing African heritage of the diaspora, promoting projects relating to black identity in the UK.
Our recent collaborations with Chinese museum professionals range from photography and digitisation projects to collections research and education programmes.
We have deep and long standing relationships with museums and audiences across Europe, facilitating research, loans and exhibitions.
Our curators and conservators are frequent visitors to Indian art institutions, working with several museums on a variety of projects. We regularly welcome research visits from museum professionals in India to the V&A.
The Museum acquired a great many Japanese objects in its early years, playing a significant role in bringing the art of Japan to the attention of designers, manufacturers and the British public.
We have a diverse collection of Korean decorative art and a dedicated Korean gallery - the Samsung gallery.
We hold over 700 objects from Latin America, many of which were purchased at the Museum's inception.
Middle East and North Africa
Our work with the Middle East and North Africa includes hosting the annual Jameel Prize, an international prize for contemporary artists whose work is inspired by Islamic traditions of craft and design.
We have deep and long standing relationships with museums and audiences across America, facilitating research, loans and exhibitions.
We have developed an increasingly active relationship with Russia in recent years, with collaborations taking place both in Russia and the UK.
We have developed relationships with Turkey through our collections, touring exhibitions and partnerships.
American Friends of the V&A and International Supporters
The American Friends of the V&A is an independent charity based in New York that supports the work of the V&A by raising gifts towards acquisitions, exhibitions, scholarship and capital projects. It receives full tax exempt status from the IRS under section 501(c) (3) allowing United States taxpayers to receive tax deductions on gifts.
Please visit AFV&A for further information on the American Friends programme and donating to the AFV&A.
Through the range and quality of the V&A's programme, the Museum has built a network of supporters across Asia, Europe and North America. This network is strengthened through the work of the American Friends of the V&A and through all those who host events to celebrate our touring exhibitions. Travel with the V&A, a programme of cultural tours for our supporters, encourages further international networking.
